This afternoon as I was preparing dinner for the horses a cicada landed on top of the feed in one of the feed bags. Obviously I couldn't just leave it there. Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a fan of creepy looking things so spiders, creepy bugs like cicadas, snakes, etc. all make my list of things that make me scream.
To my credit I didn't scream, I just stood there staring at this stupid cicada in the feedbag. After having a pep talk with myself ("you can DO THIS") I got my nerve up and reached in the feedbag and scooped/flung the cicada out. Before, during and after the cicada flinging exercise I was chanting "gross gross gross" but was quite impressed with myself for taking charge of the situation with such authority. Jason was unloading feed in the shed and had nothing to say about my commentary. He probably couldn't hear exactly what I was saying, and he's probably quite used to me talking to myself as well.
Although they are brief and fleeting there are moments when an office job doesn't seem so bad.

UGGG... one landed on my shoulder today and when I looked down to see if it was still there it jumped up in my face. I screamed like a little girl.
AND I got hit in the face with one while cantering.
AND I had three horses do teleportation-spooks when they jumped up at them today.
i just looked them up to see what they look like, wow, disgusting.
i might faint if one got on me. you're braver than i - i absolutely could have have grabbed that bug.
it's a very good year for bugs around here too. the may beetles came back which supposedly signifies good crops. the may beeltes have legs like your cicadas. but thankfully they don't usually get on me.
all sorts of other creepy bugs are though and it makes working outside difficult for me. i keep hurting myself jumping away from bugs. (i swiped a bug off of me using the handful of stinging nettles i had just pulled, oww!)
I can do you one better - one day at the barn I got that "I can see something out of the corner of my eye, and it's on my shoulder" feeling - and yikes! it was a giant praying mantis that had apparently fallen out of the hay loft. I actually like cicadas - they're a true sign of summer here and we usually don't hear them until July and August.
Yuck - not a bug fan either.

I've had bugs at my office job - one time a huuuggggee spider went trucking across an open carpeted area near my desk. I didn't want to scream or call for help, but also couldn't get close enough to squish him... So, I grabbed the closest heavy object, which happened to be a copy of the Criminal Code and dropped it on him. Heh.
We experienced the year of the cicadas in Virginia as well. The dogs literally grabbed them out of the air and ate them by the hundreds! They had stories on the local TV about how to cook them and I actually tried eating one myself. It was very sweet tasting. I do not mind them except for the noise but spiders, especially the big ones, and mice and rats make me SCREAM!
I hate hate hate cicadas - they are just the creepiest looking things ever created. Hopefully they all stay in TN this year....
But good for you for dealing with it! :)
Ugh. The last ones I saw were Brood XIII in 2007. They're so gross, but I love their sound and they don't actually bite or anything.
Lytha - did you see what the larvae look like?! Finding the skins everywhere is kinda cool.
Melissa, you need to train your dogs better. Any properly trained barn dog should gleefully jump into the feed sack to eat the cicada (and some feed) on your command.
